Using PhoneGap

The Cordova framework is a great framework to build cross-platform mobile apps using HTML 5 / JavaScript. Especially with the Adobe’s PhoneGap implementation and PhoneGap Build services you don’t have to install any mobile SDK’s locally. It lets PhoneGap build the device specific binaries for you.

Basically you’ll need to zip your html content, specify some settings in the config.xml file and upload this package to build.phonegap.com. When the compilation is complete you will be able to download the app from your device and run it.

As seen above, the generation of binaries is very time consuming. Especially while debugging!

A single click deployment

Luckily, the PhoneGap Build service has an API you can call to do this for you! I’ve created a console application that deploys your app in a single click!

Download the executable (or source) and open the Suneco.Cordova.Build.Config file and fill in the path of your cordova html source and the config.xml file. You can leave AppId and SecurityToken empty.

The first time that you start the app, you will have to log in with your PhoneGap username and password and then select your AppId. The AppId and security token will be stored in the Suneco.Cordova.Build.Config file so you won’t have to log in again.

When you have hydration enabled in your App’s dashboard page, your app will see that there is a new version available and will download it automatically.

Within seconds you will have your changes deployed on to your device!
